I





Set ope all shutters, that the day come in

Abram-se as janelas e que entre o dia

Like a sea or a din!

Como um mar de ruído!

Let not a nook of useless shade compel

Nem reste um canto de vã sombra a compelir

Thoughts of the night, or tell

Pensares noturnos, ou contar

The mind's comparing that some things are sad,

Ao cotêjo da mente que há coisas tão tristes

For this day all are glad!

Neste dia de tanta alegria.

'Tis morn, 'tis open morn, the full sun is

É manhã, manhã aberta, o pleno Sol

Risen from out the abyss

Ascendeu do abismo

Where last night lay beyond the unseen rim

Onde à noite estêve além do inviso arco

Of the horizon dim.

Do horizonte fôsco.

Now is the bride awaking. Lo! she starts

Vai despertando a noiva. Eis!

To feel the day is home

Começa a sentir que entra o dia

Whose too-near night will put two different hearts

Cuja noite tão logo fará dois diferentes corações

To beat as near as flesh can let them come.

Bater tão perto quanto a carne o permitir.





Guess how she joys in her feared going, nor opes

Pensai quanto se alegra no temido ir-se,

Her eyes for fear of fearing at her joy.

Nem abre os olhos de medo de temer a alegria.

Now is the pained arrival of all hopes.

Já é a vinda dorida de toda a esperança.

With the half-thought she scarce knows how to toy.

Com tal pressentir ela nem sabe bem brincar.

Oh, let her wait a moment or a day

Oh, deixai que espere um instante, um dia

And prepare for the fray

P'ra dispor-se a esta luta

For which her thoughts not ever quite prepare!

À qual seu pensar nem sempre se dispôs!

With the real day's arrival she's half wroth.

Vindo o dia realmente, está quase irada.

Though she wish what she wants, she yet doth stay.

Se ela anela o que quer, assim mesmo fica.

Her dreams yet merged are

Seus sonhos 'inda imersos são

In the slow verge of sleep, which idly doth

Na tarda margem do sono, que em vão

The accurate hope of things remotely mar.

A precisa espera das coisas vagamente mancha.




II





Part from the windows the small curtains set

Separai nas janelas as leves cortinas:

Sight more than light to omit!

Desvelam mais que a luz omitem!

Look on the general fields, how bright they lie

Olhai o extenso campo, quão brilhante jaz

Under the broad blue sky,

Sob o amplo céu azul

Cloudless, and the beginning of the heat

Sem nuvens, e o começo do calor

Does the sight half ill-treat!

Já faz quase mal à vista!

The bride hath wakened. Lo! she feels her shaking

A noiva está acordando. Eis! Pressente o palpitar

Heart better all her waking!

Do coração enquanto acorda!

Her breasts are with fear's coldness inward clutched

Seus seios são por frio receio contraídos,

And more felt on her grown,

Mais cientes de no seu desabrochar

That will by hands other than hers be touched

Que mãos outras que as dela os tocarão

And will find lips sucking their budded crown.

E terão lábios sorvendo as flóreas pontas.





Lo! the thought of the bridegroom's hands already

Eis! Já as maõs-imagens do noivo sente

Feels her about where even her hands are shy,

Tocar mesmo onde as dela se acanham,

And her thoughts shrink till they become unready

E seu pensar se encolhe até a indistinção.

She gathers up her body and still doth lie.

Ela soergue o corpo, deita-se contudo.

She vaguely lets her eyes feel opening.

Vagamente deixa os olhos sentir-se abrindo.

In a fringed mist each thing

Em franjada névoa cada coisa

Looms, and the present day is truly clear

Imerge, e o presente dia é mesmo claro

But to her sense of fear.

Menos ao seu senso-receio.

Like a hue, light lies on her lidded sight,

Qual matiz, luz lhe jaz sobre pálpebras,

And she half hates the inevitable light.

E quase odeia a inevitável luz.





III





Open the windows and the doors all wide

Abram janelas e as portas de todo.

Lest aught of night abide

Que nada da noite fique,

Or, like a ship's trail in the sea, survive

Ou, qual rasto de barco no mar, resista

What made it there to live!

Ao que a fez viver ali!

She lies in bed half waiting that her wish

No leito fica, como à espera que o desejo

Grow bolder or more rich

Cresça mais, audaz e fértil

To make her rise, or poorer, to oust fear,

Para erguê-la, ou tão tênue que expulse o medo,

And she rise as a common day were here.

E ela se erga como se comum fôsse o dia.

That she would be a bride in bed with man

Que se tornaria noiva na cama com homem

The parts where she is woman do insist

Suas partes de mulher insistem

And send up messages that shame doth ban

E mandam acima mensagens que o pudor proíbe

From being dreamed but in a shapeless mist.

Serem sonhadas salvo em vaga névoa.





She opes her eyes, the ceiling sees above

Ela abre os olhos, o teto vê acima

Shutting the small alcove,

Fechando a estreita alcova,

And thinks, till she must shut her eyes again,

E pensa, tendo até que fechá-los de novo,

Another ceiling she this night will know,

Que outro teto ela à noite verá,

Another house, another bed, she lain

Noutra casa, noutra cama, deitada

In a way she half guesses; so

De um jeito que quase adivinha;

She shuts her eyes to see not the room she

Então fecha os olhos para introver o quarto

Soon will no longer see.

Que logo tão pouco verá.





IV





Let the wide light come through the whole house now

Deixai que a plena luz já transpasse a casa tôda

Like a herald with brow

Qual arauto co'a fronte

Garlanded round with roses and those leaves

Em tais guirlandas de rosas e folhas

That love for its love weaves!

Que o amor por amor se tece!

Between her and the ceiling this day's ending

Entre ela e o teto ao fim do dia

A man's weight will be bending.

Um homem arqueará seu pêso.

Lo! with the thought her legs she twines, well knowing

Vê! a esta idéia as pernas cruza, bem sabendo

A hand will part them then;

Que mãos as virão separar;

Fearing that entering in her, that allowing

Temendo este entrar nela, o consentir

That will make softness begin rude at pain.

Que fará ternura começar rude em dor.

If ye, glad sunbeams, are inhabited

Se sois, gaios raios de sol, habitados

By sprites or gnomes that dally with the day

Por espíritos ou gnomos que com o dia ludiam,

Whisper her, if she shrink that she'll be bled,

Soprai-lhe, caso se encolha à idéia de sangrar,

That love's large bower is doored in this small way.

Que do amor à larga alcova tal porta estreita conduz.

Now will her grave of untorn maidenhood

Já lhe será a tumba da intacta virgindade

Be dug in her small blood.

Cavada em pouco sangue.

Assemble ye at that glad funeral

Reuni-vos a este feliz funeral

And weave her scarlet pall,

E tecei a escarlate mortalha,

O pinings for the flesh of man that often

Oh anseios por carne viril

Did her secret hours soften

Que tanto lhe abrandaram as horas secretas

And take her willing and unwilling hand

E levaram-lhe a mão querendo sem querer

Where pleasure starteth up.

Lá onde prazer irrompe.

Come forth, ye moted gnomes, unruly band,

Surgi, mínimos gnomos, bando turbulento

That come so quick ye spill your brimming cup;

Que vem tão veloz que a transbordante taça entorna;

Ye that make youth young and flesh nice

Vós que fazeis a juventude jovem e a carne encanto

And the glad spring and summer sun arise;

E nascer alegre primavera e sol de verão;

Ye by whose secret the trees grow

Vós por cuja secreta presença árvores crescem

Green, and the flowers bud, and birds sing free,

Verdes, e flores brotam, e aves cantam livres,

When with the fury of a trembling glow

Quando na fúria de um trêmulo ardor

The bull climbs on the heifer mightly!

O touro cobre a novilha vigoroso!
